Xbox faults we see every week.
Xbox Series consoles are well-built, but there are five repair jobs that come through our door again and again. If your Xbox is misbehaving, it's almost certainly one of these — and every single one is fixable in-house, most of them same day, for a fixed price that's on this page.
1. Series X HDMI port failure
Symptom: No picture on the TV. Sometimes flickers, sometimes dead.
Cause: The HDMI port is soldered directly to the main board. A knocked or tripped-over cable shears the solder joints or snaps the port off entirely.
Fix: Micro-soldering. The Series X has a tighter layout than the Series S which is why the price is a bit higher — more disassembly, more bench time. Usually same-day.
2. Series S HDMI port failure
Symptom: Same as Series X — no picture, flicker, or total dead.
Cause: Identical mechanism — cable stress on a board-mounted port.
Fix: Micro-soldering. The Series S is a much easier disassembly than the X, so it costs less. This is the £50 same-day job that's already earned us a 5-star Google review.
3. Overheating / shutting off
Symptom: Console gets loud. Runs hot to the touch. Shuts itself off under load, especially during longer sessions.
Cause: Dust packing the heat sink and PSU vents plus dried-out thermal paste on the APU. Happens to every Xbox eventually.
Fix: Full strip, clean out every dust trap, replace the thermal paste, reassemble, stress test. Works on Series X, Series S and Xbox One S.
4. Disc drive / laser problems
Symptom: Disc won't read. Drive won't spin. Clicking noises, or complete silence when inserting a game.
Cause: Usually the drive motor, the laser assembly, or the drive control board. Xbox disc drives are more reliable than PlayStation drives but they do fail.
Fix: Diagnose on the bench, repair or swap the faulty component. Not a common job but we see a few every month.
5. No power / completely dead
Symptom: Plug it in. Nothing. No lights, no fan, no sound.
Cause: Failed internal PSU, or a shorted capacitor on the main board drawing the supply rail down.
Fix: Thermal camera diagnosis, current injection to find the short, component-level repair. Board-level work so it's not always same-day but usually back within 48 hours.
Why Xbox repairs are different.
Definition: Xbox thermal management
Xbox Series consoles use traditional thermal paste on the APU, not liquid metal like the PS5. That's actually good news for long-term reliability — paste doesn't migrate, so you don't get the "bald spots" problem PlayStation 5 owners deal with. But it does dry out and lose effectiveness over two to three years of use, especially if the console has been running hot the whole time.
The Xbox also has a very different cooling setup to the PS5 — a single large vapour chamber on the Series X and a more compact heat sink on the Series S. Both rely on airflow pulled through the fan, and both get choked up with dust over time. Regular cleaning every 18-24 months keeps them running cool and quiet for years.
If your Xbox is older than a couple of years and has never been opened, the chances are it needs a deep clean and repaste. You'll notice the difference immediately — quieter fan, cooler body, no more sudden shutdowns.
Real workshop, real tools, real engineer.
Xbox repairs need the same equipment as PlayStation repairs — a microscope for HDMI port work, a soldering station for board-level component replacement, a thermal camera to find shorted caps on no-power jobs. The drop-off counters and courier services most Xbox repair "shops" use don't have any of this on site because they don't actually do the repairs themselves.

Xbox repair prices, written down.
Every other Xbox repair shop in Southport hides their prices behind a quote form. We don't. Here's what Xbox repairs actually cost at our Gravel Lane workshop.
| Repair | Price | Typical turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X HDMI port replacement | £70 | Same day before 2pm |
| Xbox Series S HDMI port replacement | £50 | Same day before 2pm |
| Xbox deep clean + new thermal paste (X / S / One S) | £35 | Same day before 2pm |
| Xbox disc drive / laser repair | £40 | Same day before 2pm |
| Xbox no-power / board-level diagnosis | £80 | Up to 48 hours |
| Xbox diagnosis only (if you're not sure what's wrong) | Free | No fix, no fee |
All prices include parts, labour, and a 6-month warranty on the specific work carried out. Xbox One S covered at the same prices where the repair is economical. We do not work on original Xbox One, Xbox 360 or older hardware.
Most Xbox repairs done the same day.
HDMI port replacements, deep cleans, disc drive swaps — all same day if you drop off before 2pm and the parts are in stock. Board-level no-power diagnosis can take up to 48 hours because we need bench time for thermal imaging and current injection, but even those usually come back within 2 days.
The alternative most people don't realise exists: the drop-off repair counters in Southport are fronts for courier services that ship your Xbox to a warehouse somewhere else in the country. That's where the "5 to 7 working day turnaround" comes from — most of that time is your console sitting in a van or a queue. We cut all of that out because the workshop is the shop. You walk in, the engineer takes it, the engineer fixes it, you walk out.
A real Xbox Series S HDMI repair, from a real Southport customer.
"HDMI port on our Xbox Series S was damaged, I rang around a few places and got quoted £80+ with a waiting time of several days (including the CEX company who actually send it off to be repaired). For £50 and same day repair I had an Xbox that finally worked again. Graham was more than happy to see me on short notice, and sent me photos to keep me updated. He is very detail oriented and does a cracking job. A big thanks for being affordable too."
Karmen's review is exactly why we put real prices on this site. Nobody should have to ring round five shops to find out a Series S HDMI port is £50, not £80. Nobody should have their console shipped off to a third party. And nobody should wait a week for a same-day job.
Not an Xbox? We probably fix that too.

Questions we get asked about Xbox repairs.
How much does an Xbox HDMI port repair cost in Southport?
Xbox Series X HDMI port replacement is £70. Xbox Series S HDMI port replacement is £50 — the Series S is a simpler disassembly so it costs less. Both are fixed prices and both are same-day if dropped off before 2pm with the parts in stock.
Why is Xbox Series X HDMI repair more expensive than Series S?
The Xbox Series X has a tighter internal layout and more disassembly steps to reach the HDMI port. It takes significantly longer on the bench than a Series S, which is why we charge £70 for the X vs £50 for the S. We could charge the same for both, but we prefer to be honest about what the job actually takes.
Does my Xbox need a deep clean?
If your Xbox has been getting louder, running hotter, or shutting itself off, the answer is almost certainly yes. Dust builds up in the heat sink and PSU vents over time, airflow drops, temperatures climb, and the console throttles or protects itself by powering off. Our £35 deep clean fully strips the Xbox, cleans every surface, and replaces the thermal paste. Works on Series X, Series S and Xbox One S.
My Xbox disc drive isn't working. Can you fix it?
Usually yes. Xbox disc drive failures aren't as common as on PlayStations, but when they happen it's normally the motor, laser assembly, or the drive board itself. We diagnose on the bench and repair or swap depending on what's wrong. Typical price £40 fixed. We only work on Xbox Series X, Series S and Xbox One S — older Xbox hardware isn't economical to repair.
My Xbox is completely dead. Can you bring it back?
Often yes. A fully dead Xbox is usually a failed PSU or a shorted capacitor on the main board. We diagnose with a thermal camera to find the short, then repair at component level. Price is £80 including diagnosis and fix. This is board-level work so it's not always same-day — usually back within 48 hours.
Do you fix older Xboxes like the Xbox One or Xbox 360?
We work on the Xbox One S but nothing older. The original Xbox One, Xbox 360 and earlier consoles aren't economical to repair — parts are getting harder to source and the replacement cost of a working second-hand unit is often less than what the repair would cost you.
What if you diagnose my Xbox and decide it's not worth fixing?
No Fix No Fee. If we diagnose your Xbox and the repair isn't economical, you take it home at no charge. We diagnose first and only proceed once you've agreed to the price.
